Kai Fageshinski (Los Glissandinos, The Magic I.D., etc.) and Michael
Theilke (Unununium, The Magic I.D., etc.) are members of Berlin's
vibrant echtzeitmusik scene. The International Nothing (*2000) is
their hardest working project of the last years. They are working
exclusively on compositions (no improv), where both instruments melt
into one sound, which sometimes sounds like more than two instruments
through the extended use of multiphonics and difference tones. Their
pieces have a delicate and slowed down quality and celebrate a unique
and timeless beauty. They will present a collection of pieces
developed between 2003 and 2009.

Three musicians from disparate schools of improvisation come together for a night of inspired music. Christine Sehnaoui, an alto saxophonist, is a rising star of the European free jazz scene and a leading figure in the burgeoning improv scene in Beirut, Lebannon. Acclaimed drummer Andrew Drury lives in Brooklyn and has collaborated with Nate Wooley, Jack Wright, Steve Swell and Ruben Radding, among others. Greg Kelley is a trumpeter from Boston who plays in Nmperign.

This concert is presented in partnership with the 2009 PDX Jazz Festival.

About the Musicians:

Christine Sehnaoui is a Lebanese alto saxophonist who has been performing in Paris to great acclaim in recent years. Her main musical partners are Stéphane Rives, Quentin Dubost, Agnès Palier, Sebastien Bouhana and Mazen Kerbaj. She organizes the annual Irtijal Festival in Lebbanon for improvised music. She has also played with Le Quan Ninh, Mats Gustaffsson, Paul Flaherty, Daniel Carter, Wilbert deJoode and many, many more. Andrew Drury is a Brooklyn based percussionist who has appeared on over 25 CDs as well as given over 1000 workshops. Greg Kelley, a trumpet player in Boston, is perhaps best known for his collaboration with Bhob Rainey as Nmperign, a group that has recorded several well received CDs and collaborated with such musicians as Jason Lescalleet, Le Quan Ninh, Andrea Neumann and Axel Dorner. Better Homes & Gardens (Reed Wallsmith, Sly Pig, Tim DuRoche, and Bob Jones) will be performing Tuesday, February 3 at Valentines (232 SW Ankeny Street in Portland) along with Oakland’s Painted Cakes and Portland’s own Bird Costumes. Music at 9 pm.

On the menu: Free Improvisation for a Brave New World. Shades and flavors recalling revolutionary jazz from the nostalgic era of late-60s Vietnam escalation, when fire, beauty, freedom and raw story-telling was a powerful currency in film, popular music and on the street and jazz was still a threat to the Man. Ah the good old days.

John Wiese is an artist and composer from Los Angeles, California. His ongoing projects include LHD and Sissy Spacek, with plenty of freelance work with many artists as diverse as Sunn O))), Wolf Eyes, Merzbow, Dave Phillips, Smegma, Kevin Drumm, Cattle Decapitation, and C. Spencer Yeh (Burning Star Core). He has toured extensively throughout the world, covering Europe, Scandinavia and Australia as a member of Sunn O))), the UK as part of the Free Noise tour (a tentet including Evan Parker, C. Spencer Yeh, Yellow Swans, etc.), the United States alongside Wolf Eyes, and recently performed in the 52nd Venice Biennale with artist Nico Vascellari. His music is diverse, with each album and every concert exploring a variety of approaches and paths, resulting in dramatically different outcomes.

Thollem is a recent recipient of a Meet The Composer grant. He was commissioned by The Limon Dance Company for a large-scale piece in commemoration of their 50th year anniversary. Last Autumn he spent 15 weeks playing 65 concerts circumnavigating the U.S. This September he has been invited to perform the late works of Claude Debussy on the piano on which they were written, as well as his own comprovisations with Stefano Scodanibbio. This will be the first album (They're Seen From Other Places) ever recorded on Debussy's piano.

Thollem has performed in theaters, art galleries, universities, elementary schools, concert halls, jazz clubs, rock clubs, festivals, warehouses, house concerts, streets, forests, riots and on television and radio. He has performed piano concertos with symphonies, played in West African drumming troupes, Javanese gamelan ensembles, an afro-punk band, with hundreds of free improv groups, and as an accompanist and a composer for opera and modern dance. His music appeals to a wide variety of audiences because of these rich and wildly disparate experiences. Currently Thollem Primarily plays his own comprovisations he calls Eccentriclect Music, for people and everyone else.

about the Duo:

Two musicians of different backgrounds share passion for improvisation and redefining their instruments.

Genres are meant to be bent. That's what legendary British percussionist, Paul Lytton and New York trumpeter Nate Wooley believe. The two musicians, from seemingly different backgrounds and musical circles met up in 2006 to record their eponymous debut LP for Detroit's Broken Research Records.

Paul Lytton, known primarily in the US as the drummer for the ground breaking Evan Parker Trio, has been forging new ground as a free jazz percussionist, electronicist, and maker of instruments (for example, the lyttonophone) for almost 40 years. Along with Paul Lovens, Tony Oxley, and John Stevens, he is firmly entrenched in the British tradition of experimental improvisers who have gone beyond the jazz tradition to deal with a new way of improvising. Over the years, he has played with such improvising luminaries as Parker, Barry Guy, Marilyn Crispell, and Ken Vandermark.

Nate Wooley is a relative newcomer to improvised music circles, breaking into that public's consciousness with his solo recording, "wrong shape to be a storyteller" (Creative Sources Recordings) two years ago. Growing up in a small fishing town in Oregon, Nate got a solid jazz education from his father in a northwest coast dance band, but eschewed the tradition of jazz trumpet to concentrate on extreme sound, touring and recording with such hard noise and rock groups as Melee, Graveyards, and Akron/Family. He is currently working in New York with everyone from Drag City's David Grubbs to new music composer/bagpiper Matthew Welch.

The two met at a birthday concert for experimental jazz tubist, Carl Ludwig Huebsch in Cologne, Germany last year. Wooley remembers, "The whole group was playing very quietly, lots of silence. I love that kind of playing, but really prefer a wide dynamic range. Out of the blue, there was this huge crash in the corner. I think Paul had thrown all his percussion on the ground, just to shake things up. I went nuts. I thought, 'this is a real improviser'."
