These master musicians from divergent but complimentary aesthetic backgrounds will traverse thrilling musical landscapes in this rare duo collaboration.

Bios:

Tatsuya Nakatani, originally from Osaka, Japan, is a contemporary improvising percussionist. Nakatani has created his own instrumentation, effectively inventing many instruments and extended techniques. He utilizes drumset, large bowed gongs, cymbals, singing bowls, metal objects, bells, and various sticks and bows to create an intense, organic music that defies category or genre. His music is based in experiment and improvisation, jazz, free jazz, rock, and noise, yet retains the sense of space and beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music.

In his ecstatic performances, Nakatani erects and then dismantles unique sonic realms that are at once focused and expansive, consuming and liberating. Nakatani has performed or recorded with some of the great improvising musicians of the last 20 years including Ken Vandermark, Peter Brotzmann, Joe McPhee, Mary Halvorson, Reuben Radding, and the late Peter Kowald.

In addition to live solo and ensemble performances Nakatani works as a sound designer for film and television and teaches Masterclasses and Workshops at the University level. He also heads H&H Production, an independent record label and recording studio based in Easton, Pennsylvania. He was selected as a performing artist for the Pennsylvania Performing Artist on Tour (PennPat) roster as well as a Bronx Arts Council Individual Artist grant.

Seth Olinsky is a guitarist, vocalist, composer and core member of acclaimed experimental rock group Akron/Family. He has conducted Rhys Chatham's guitar piece at Lincoln Center two years running. Olinsky has recorded with master free jazz drummer Hamid Drake, William Parker, and continues to perform and record with many notable musicians.

Wayne Horvitz (keyboard/piano - Seattle), Le Quan Ninh (percussion - France), and Briggan Krauss (saxophone - Brooklyn) each create music of such sensitivity, versatility and range that we are giddy with excitement to hear the three of them at work together!

Wayne Horvitz is no stranger to Portland's music fans and is sure to astound us again with this killer trio. Briggan
Krauss is a long-time Horvitz collaborator, a founding member of Sex Mob, and has made music with everyone from Antony to John Zorn. This will be Lê Quan Ninh's second visit to Portland -- he blew us all away with his mastery of extended percussion and outstanding sensitivity in a duo with Michel Doneda at Gallery Homeland last year.

Consisting of a left half known as Drew Ceccato (winds) and right half that answers to Chris Golinski (percussion), Brains plays improvised music meant to stir aggressive thought and produce anything but indifferent emotional responses. Their music comes in waves of energetic output that cohesively guide a daring listener through a multitude of different sonic spacescapes. Encompassing influences from both modern improvisational music to throw-back 70’s free-jazz, these two musical astronauts have a lot to say. Saxophonist and composer Jacob Zimmerman (b.1986) studied at the renowned Garfield High School in Seattle, and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts where he received a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Saxophone Performance. Zimmerman is currently a 2nd year Masters Composition student at Mills College in Oakland, California. His teachers have included Roscoe Mitchell, Jerry Bergonzi, James Fei, Joe Morris, Anthony Coleman, Allan Chase, and John Mallia. Tim DuRoche is a Portland, OR-based artist and arts and culture advocate who’s worked for nearly two decades at the intersections of the visual, performing, literary and media arts. He is a jazz musician-composer and conceptual artist fascinated by the slim corridors running between art, utility, entertainment, and civic engagement. In addition to site-specific performances, sound installations, composition, nightclub, and festival appearances, DuRoche is a well-respected jazz and culture writer.

Dominic Duval is a legendary free jazz musician based in NYC and one
of the most recorded bassists working today. Active for 30 + years at
the forefront of improvisation he spent 10 years working with the
great piano genius Cecil Taylor. This is an extremely rare West Coast
appearance for Duval.

Dana Reason teaches at Oregon State University and is the Founder
and Director of the Between the Cracks: A Forum for Music, Arts,
Science and Ideas, a cross-disciplinary initiative designed to foster
a new community centered in creative, critical and cross-cultural
exchange. She’s worked an extensive array of some of contemporary
music’s finest innovators.

Tim DuRoche is a composer, jazz musician and artist who’s worked with
an extensive array of US and European avant-garde jazz greats
(including Frank Gratkowski, Perry Robinson, Toshi Makihara, Lisle
Ellis and Paul Plimley) as well as with Beijing Opera musicians,
Russian circus clowns, auctioneers, blues legends, performance poets,
and as a composer of live soundtracks for classic silent film. His
recent work has included collaborations with dance artists including
Tere Mathern Dance, Oslund+Co., BodyVox, Cydney Wilkes, and Linda K.
Johnson.

Bhob Rainey > composer, saxophonist, electronic musician

Bhob Rainey's music has become a model in the world of experimental
sound. He is the founder of both nmperign (with trumpeter Greg
Kelley) and the BSC, which he also directs. Collaborations with
musicians such as Ralf Wehowsky, Le Quan Ninh, Gunter Mueller, and
Lionel Marchetti, dancers Nicole Bindler and Yukiko Nakamura, and
filmmakers Loren Boyer, Harvey Benschoter, and William Pisarri
highlight Rainey's broad experience and outline a complex body of work
that continues to expand and surprise. His music occupies a charged
space between synthetic and organic sound, bringing forth improbable
sensual and narrative experiences through virtuosic extended
techniques, homemade synths and sound processors, found recordings,
and a kind of living silence that is apt to wreak havoc with the
perception of time.

Recordings of Rainey's music have been released on labels such as
Selektion, Grob, Sedimental, Rossbin, Twisted Village, and Siwa. They
number in the dozens and have garnered a wealth of international
accolades. Festival appearances have included Musique Action, Instal,
Amplify, Densites, Fruits d'Mhere, High Zero, and Improvised and
Otherwise.

Rainey has also performed the works of Christian Wolff (with the
composer), John Cage, and Cornelius Cardew and is the orchestral
arranger for pop artists Damon and Naomi.

PDX LARGE ENSEMBLE is a new collaborative effort from a community of Portland area improvising/jazz/avant/noise musicians (Mary Sutton, John Savage, Tim DuRoche, Mary-Sue Tobin, Jonathan Sielaff, Todd Dickerson, Kevin Van Geem, Gregg Skloff, Brandon Conway, J Morales and more. The group will feature avant compositions, free improvisation and work with touring avant musicians as a residential “house” ensemble. The concerts will be sponsored by the CMG (Creative Music Guild) and take place on bi monthly basis. The initial group was part of a concert in June with Urs Leimgruber (also CMG sponsored).

Since arriving in Seattle in the mid- nineties, Bill has established himself as a highly regarded performer, composer and improviser. He has appeared on over 50 releases and has performed hundreds of concert around the world. (b.1964, Vejle, Denmark)
Composer, electronic musician, improviser. Active in the experimental fields of electronic music, soundart, improvisation and contemporary composition. Former trombonist, now focusing on electronic music, laptop pioneer on the danish experimental scene. Today Jakob Riis is primarily making electronic, noise and electroacoustic music, often making solo laptop prefomances, improvising within open structures. As a composer he has composed music for bigband, chamber ensembles as well as electronic and electro acoustic music, for ensembles like Copenhagen Art Ensemble, The Orchestra and The Ghettoblaster Ensemble. As an improviser he is playing with people like Axel Dörner, Jassem Hindi, Philipp Wachsmann, Peter Ole Jørgensen, Mats Gustafsson, Pål Nilssen-Love, Lotte Anker a.o. Studied trombone at the Rhythmic Conservatory (RMC) in Copenhagen, where he graduated in 1990. In 97-99 he studied composition with Bob Brookmeyer at RMC.

The meeting of Dutch reedist Ab Baars and his American counterpart Ken Vandermark offers the uproar you'd expect when acknowledged tenor heavyweights join forces. But there's plenty more to enjoy than displays of heroic strength. This band, with bassist Wilbert de Joode and drummer Martin van Duynhoven shows open forms, varied improvisational strategies, wacky use of juxtaposition, and an unwillingness to treat jazz—or any music—as a fixed art form. They play two sets preceded by an artist’s talk.

Three musicians from disparate schools of improvisation come together for a night of inspired music. Christine Sehnaoui, an alto saxophonist, is a rising star of the European free jazz scene and a leading figure in the burgeoning improv scene in Beirut, Lebannon. Acclaimed drummer Andrew Drury lives in Brooklyn and has collaborated with Nate Wooley, Jack Wright, Steve Swell and Ruben Radding, among others. Greg Kelley is a trumpeter from Boston who plays in Nmperign.

This concert is presented in partnership with the 2009 PDX Jazz Festival.

About the Musicians:

Christine Sehnaoui is a Lebanese alto saxophonist who has been performing in Paris to great acclaim in recent years. Her main musical partners are Stéphane Rives, Quentin Dubost, Agnès Palier, Sebastien Bouhana and Mazen Kerbaj. She organizes the annual Irtijal Festival in Lebbanon for improvised music. His music is diverse, with each album and every concert exploring a variety of approaches and paths, resulting in dramatically different outcomes.

Thollem is a recent recipient of a Meet The Composer grant. He was commissioned by The Limon Dance Company for a large-scale piece in commemoration of their 50th year anniversary. Last Autumn he spent 15 weeks playing 65 concerts circumnavigating the U.S. This September he has been invited to perform the late works of Claude Debussy on the piano on which they were written, as well as his own comprovisations with Stefano Scodanibbio. This will be the first album (They're Seen From Other Places) ever recorded on Debussy's piano.

Thollem has performed in theaters, art galleries, universities, elementary schools, concert halls, jazz clubs, rock clubs, festivals, warehouses, house concerts, streets, forests, riots and on television and radio. He has performed piano concertos with symphonies, played in West African drumming troupes, Javanese gamelan ensembles, an afro-punk band, with hundreds of free improv groups, and as an accompanist and a composer for opera and modern dance. His music appeals to a wide variety of audiences because of these rich and wildly disparate experiences. Currently Thollem Primarily plays his own comprovisations he calls Eccentriclect Music, for people and everyone else.

about the Duo:

Two musicians of different backgrounds share passion for improvisation and redefining their instruments.

Genres are meant to be bent. That's what legendary British percussionist, Paul Lytton and New York trumpeter Nate Wooley believe. The two musicians, from seemingly different backgrounds and musical circles met up in 2006 to record their eponymous debut LP for Detroit's Broken Research Records.

Paul Lytton, known primarily in the US as the drummer for the ground breaking Evan Parker Trio, has been forging new ground as a free jazz percussionist, electronicist, and maker of instruments (for example, the lyttonophone) for almost 40 years. Along with Paul Lovens, Tony Oxley, and John Stevens, he is firmly entrenched in the British tradition of experimental improvisers who have gone beyond the jazz tradition to deal with a new way of improvising. Over the years, he has played with such improvising luminaries as Parker, Barry Guy, Marilyn Crispell, and Ken Vandermark.

Nate Wooley is a relative newcomer to improvised music circles, breaking into that public's consciousness with his solo recording, "wrong shape to be a storyteller" (Creative Sources Recordings) two years ago. Growing up in a small fishing town in Oregon, Nate got a solid jazz education from his father in a northwest coast dance band, but eschewed the tradition of jazz trumpet to concentrate on extreme sound, touring and recording with such hard noise and rock groups as Melee, Graveyards, and Akron/Family. He is currently working in New York with everyone from Drag City's David Grubbs to new music composer/bagpiper Matthew Welch.

The two met at a birthday concert for experimental jazz tubist, Carl Ludwig Huebsch in Cologne, Germany last year. Wooley remembers, "The whole group was playing very quietly, lots of silence. I love that kind of playing, but really prefer a wide dynamic range. Out of the blue, there was this huge crash in the corner. I think Paul had thrown all his percussion on the ground, just to shake things up. I went nuts. I thought, 'this is a real improviser'."

Virtuoso tuba player Carl Ludwig Hubsch is making a first-time visit to Portland as he tours the US. He's long been a part of the vibrant Cologne jazz and improv scene and works with cats like Frank Gratkowski, Axel Doerner, Matthias Schubert and many others. He's been a part of Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy and groups led by Arthur Blythe.
For this performance he will present a set of solo work for tuba and then will be joined by Jonathan Sielaff (Bb+bass clarinets) and Tyler Wilcox (sop. sax).

DETAILS: this concert is being presented by Brad Winter, Jonathan Sielaff and Paul Middendorf and will take place at 8pm on Saturday May 3 (this saturday) at GALLERY HOMELAND (2505 SE 11th Ave./ at Division). ALL AGES. FREE ADMISSION (donations to the artist encouraged-but all are welcome).

The show will be called Cinema Soloriens and the Cosmo-Drama, and will be comprised of the films of James Harrar accompanied by musicians Marshall Allen, James Harrar, Matt Hannafin and Adam Reese. James and Marshall have been working together for about 10 years. Matt and Adam will try and fit into their world. Marshall will be playing alto sax, flute, keyboards, and EVI (electrionic valve instrument,) among others, and James will also be playing a number of instruments, including koto, bamboo sax, and clarinet. Matt will be playing percussion and Adam will be playing electric bass.

Portland free improv ensemble currently known & unknown as Fiasco.
For over 2.5 years this innovative group has been evolving almost exclusively behind closed barn doors.
They have performed at PNCA, live on KBOO 90.7 FM and as soloists, in duets and as members of other ensembles.
Core group:
Shane: multi-instrumentalist, harmolodic spoken word.
Moth: multi-instrumentalist, found & handmade objects du noiz, disc distorntionist.
Alejandro: multi-instrumentalist, king of the plastic keyboards.

STEPHANE RIVES & WADE MATTHEWS DUO

Stéphane Rives is a French soprano saxophonist who is considered a master of extended technique. His solo release, Fibres, features the use of overtones at the top range for his horn, whistling squeals, multiphonics, triple tonguing and circular breathing. He has been called a revolutionary player in recognition of his saxophone capabilities.

Wade Matthews is an American composer, musician and author who has been living in Spain for nearly 20 years. He has appeared at festivals around the world performing on bass clarinet, alto flute and electronics. Matthews has appeared on 12 discs, two of which are solo releases. Matthews conducts workshops on improvisation and has written several articles about improvisation and other arts for various publications. His many collaborators include John Butcher, Peter Kowald, and Jack Wright among many others.

The Stéphane Rives and Wade Matthews duo promises to provide a night of exploratory music that will appeal to experimental music fans as well as those interested in outstanding musicianship.

Ron Mann and Coda Magazine editor Bill Smith profile four artists who were influential in the evolution of jazz into a free-form musical art beginning in the early '60s. The film catches pioneering pianists Cecil Taylor and Paul Bley, tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp, and trumpet player Bill Dixon in dynamic performances and fascinating interviews shedding light on their approaches to music and life and the history of this unique musical genre.
