- Pete Swanson -  Much anticipated solo performance by the sonic dervish formerly of Yellow Swans.

- Golden Retriever -  Serious synth and effected bass clarinet tripscapes.  Cinematic, strange, and smart.  Jonathan Sielaff (bass clarinet) and Matt Carlson (synth).    

- Thicket - Caustic, mercurial, and intuitive improvisations by members of Dragging an Ox through Water, Why I Must Be Careful, and Fly!Fly!Fly!Fly!Fly!  Brian Mumford (guitar), Ben Kates (reed guitar), and John Niekrasz (drums).

- Rich Halley Trio - Tight, eloquent avant-jazz by Portland's finest.  Rich Halley (sax), Andre St.James (bass), Carson Halley (drums).  Rich is a fantastic saxophonist and founded the Creative Music Guild in 1991.  Andre and Carson make for a blistering rhythm section.   


- The Creative Composers' Collective of Portland will debut two new ecstatic compositions by Heather Vergotis and Ursula Morton.  Performers include stalwarts of Portland's avant music scene:  Mark Kaylor, Gregg Skloff, JP Jenkins, Ryan Steuwe, Alyssa Reed, Todd Dickerson, Heather Vergotis, and Ursula Morton.




- Deep/Leap Video is Jesse Malmed who is a video artist who has exhibited his work across the US.  He curates Deep Leap Microcinema and deftly combines live performance and contemporary video art.

THE EVENT

Remembrance and Creation is a double bill that explores the contrasting traditions in duet performance of the romantic period and avant-garde improvised jazz.

The evening will open with cellist James Waldo performing works for cello and piano accompaniment by Johannes Brahms and Frederic Chopin, giants of the romantic tradition of the 19th century. Following that will be a fully improvised free-jazz set in the Chicago tradition, featuring the duo of saxophonist Josh Beatty and drummer Anthony Poretti.

Cellist James Waldo has achieved distinction as a concert soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. Currently residing in New York City, Waldo recently received his Masters of Music degree from Mannes College, The New School for Music, where he studied with Timothy Eddy. Waldo served as principal cellist for the Mannes Orchestra and Opera from 2008-10, and has participated in numerous chamber music series around New York City, including performances at Carnegie Recital Hall, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Pierpont Morgan Library, La Poisson Rouge, and the New York Historical Society. Selected awards and prizes include: finalist in the Mannes Concerto Competition; winner of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Concerto Competition; and winner of the Menomonee Falls Concerto Competition in Wisconsin. Waldo last performed at the Old Church in July 2009, and is returning to the city for several performances with Spirits of the Red City, a national touring orchestral folk ensemble he has collaborated with since the group's formation in 2008.

Anthony Poretti (drums) and Josh Beatty (saxophones) are two up-and-coming improvisers on the Chicago experimental music scene. They began working together in 2009, and the collaboration was immediately intense, energetic and spontaneous, with unexpected twists and turns of ideas. Enticed by the power and flexibility of the collaboration, Poretti and Beatty decided to form a working duo to explore the sonic possibilities it had to offer. The duo has developed an aesthetic and dynamic concept informed equally by post-bop jazz and twentieth-century classical music. 

Beatty, originally from Seaside, Oregon, is a graduate of Pacific Lutheran University. He moved to Chicago in 1999 and is active in the free jazz, improvisational and experimental music scene. Poretti, originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, relocated to Chicago in 2009 between national tours with the chamber folk orchestra Spirits of the Red City, and performs with several avant-garde ensembles in the city.

The last Wed. of the month is upon us again and its again time for another evening of music @ the Waypost!

Last month was very nice, so much so that we're gonna start doing this event twice a month (2nd/last Wed.)

Basically what happens is Kelvin and I (Kinetic Harpoon) play a short opening set and then after a break there are ad-hoc combinations with anyone who has brought an instrument to play.  

Open to all, just don't bring a half stack and expect to play.  

Please come,  starts after 7:00 (we wait until there's enough people there, so show up on time and more music can happen), its all over by 10.

7/24/10: Golia/Halley Quartet

The Rich Halley/Vinny Golia Quartet will perform original music at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 24, at Taborspace, 5441 SE Belmont. Admission is a suggested donation of $10-$15 on a sliding scale. The quartet will include: Vinny Golia, reeds; Rich Halley, tenor sax, wood flute, percussion; Andre St James, bass; Carson Halley, drums.

Multi-instrumentalist Vinny Golia is one of the most influential creative musicians on the West Coast. As a composer, he fuses the rich heritage of Jazz, contemporary classical and world music into his own unique compositions. As a bandleader, Vinny has presented his music to audiences in Europe, Canada, Mexico, Japan and the United States in ensembles varying dramatically in size and instrumentation. He has won numerous awards as a composer, including grants from the National Endowment of the Arts, The Lila Wallace Program, The California Arts Council, Meet the Composer, and the American Composers Forum.

Rich Halley is a saxophonist and composer based on Oregon. His 11 recordings as a leader have been critically acclaimed in the jazz press, and his groups have performed at concerts, festivals and clubs in the U.S. and Canada. His most recent recording is the just-released  "Live at the Penofin Jazz Festival." Rich is a founder of the Creative Music Guild and the musical director of the Penofin Jazz Festival.

Andrew Hayleck

Andrew Hayleck is an electro-acoustic musician who lives in Baltimore, Maryland. He uses a Paia modular synthesizer, contact microphone, mixer, and two raw speakers in improvisation, utilizing the feedback and resonance characteristics of a variety of materials. He is presently building a camera obscura and documenting the slow changes of light within. Recordings include: "Two Gong/Wire Pieces" (Ehse), "Gong/Wire" (Earlids), "Various Recordings Involving Ice" (HereSee), and "The Disappearing Floor" (Recorded).

Tyler Wilcox

Born in 1979 in silver spring maryland, raised in and around baltimore. Began composing glacial drone based tape music in 2001. Switched to reeds in 2003 with a desire to embody fleeting sound phenomena. Moved to Washington state in 2005 to experience wild nature in the cascades. Experiencing true silence and the white noise of nature slowed and opened his music. Current collaborators Gust Burns, Jeffrey Allport, Kelvin PIttman, Paul Neidhardt, Mara Sedlins, Wilson Shook, and Mark collins.

Paul Neidhardt

From Baltimore-percussion, friction Baltimore's Paul Neidhardt is one of the countries most astonishing new music percussionists. A trained, highly disciplined player with a flair for complex textural sound produced by friction, Neidhardt's approach to improvising covers the majority of the terrain explored by the explosive side of European free music and subtle textural players like Sean Meehan and Jason Kahn, while retaining a freshness and flexibility of purpose all his own. His background playing rock and African music adds a potential for propulsive intesnivty to his playing not usually found in players so skilled in the arts of minimalist reductionism. Despite recovering from injuries that limited his time playing in recent years, he is a highly in-demand player, working with groups like Trokeneis, Death in the Maze, and Multiphonic Choir, as well as frequent collaborations with Jack Wright. He is currently a member of the Red Room collective and High Zero Foundation.

Saxophonist and composer Rich Halley and The Outside Music Ensemble will perform original rhythm-based jazz at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 17, on top of Powell Butte. This concert is part of the Portland Parks & Recreation Summer Concert Series, and admission is FREE for listeners who walk to the top of the butte.

“Music for Powell Butte – Sounds under the Sky” is a unique experience that appeals to both music fans and to those who want to spend a summer evening in a beautiful natural setting on top of a volcanic butte surrounded by snowcapped peaks.

The Outside Music Ensemble is an all-star group featuring musicians from up and down the West Coast. It includes: Rich Halley, tenor sax; Michael Vlatkovich, trombone; Jim Knodle, trumpet; Troy Grugett, alto sax; Dave Storrs, percussion; and Carson Halley, percussion. The music will consist of original compositions by Rich Halley.  Sponsors include the Portland Water Bureau, Penofin and the Creative Music Guild.

Mark says, "Kelvin Pittman and Mark E. Kaylor (who are Kinetic Harpoon) will be presenting a monthly series at the Waypost which will be an open forum for the community to participate in ad hoc improvised music situations.

Basically we'll play a short set together, because we enjoy doing so, and then anyone who shows up with an instrument can play some music with us and others.  Kelvin and I will probably curate this to some extent so everyone gets a chance to play.

This is open to anyone regardless of experience, gender, instrumentation, etc.

Jacob Wick was born near Chicago, IL in 1985. An “edgy, fiercely smart
improviser” (Philadelphia Weekly), who Downbeat calls “exciting and
curious,” his playing has been described as everything from “inhuman”
(Chicago Reader) to “a Shakespeare soliloquy” (allaboutjazz.com). He has
so far released two CDs: the first, an entirely improvised duo CD with
drummer Andrew Greenwald (37:55 [2008]– Creative Sources); the second,
with a collaborative trio White Rocket (White Rocket [2009]– on Diatribe).
As a composer, performer, and improviser, his goal is not necessarily to
cross boundaries, but rather to inhabit and exploit them. To this end, he
leads or co-leads several groups, all exploring the soft tissue that binds
genres, forms, and practices: A Mown Lawn, a chamber group exploring
non-narrative song; even though you’re only 9, locating the intersection
of folk forms and loosely composed improvisation; White Rocket, a
cross-Atlantic trio wading through the mud between jazz, Karnatak music,
and contemporary classical composition; and a duo with percussionist
Andrew Greenwald, using textural improvisation to reduce the two
instruments into one. His sound sculptures mistletoe and rain, clouds have
been shown in Chicago (Heaven Gallery) and New York (Issue Project Room).
He has performed with dancer/choreographer Christine Elmo and performance
artists Amir Mogharabi and Eagle Ager, as well as musicians such as Andrew
D’Angelo, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Mark Turner, and Han Bennink. He currently
lives in Brooklyn, NY.

Wilson Shook is an improvising saxophonist living in Seattle, Washington.

Wilson’s music emphasizes focus, texture, chance and exploration.  It is
‘new music’ in that it explores each new moment and seeks to develop a
critical awareness of the present.

Sonically, Wilson's music is informed by lower case and minimalist
aesthetics, while embracing the full range of his instrument.  He is
especially interested in incidental or 'between' sounds: material that
exists on the edges and in the cracks of the conventional sonic palate.

As an artist and activist, Wilson is concerned with the actualization of
feminist and libertarian ethics.  Investigating the interplay between
artistic freedom and freedom at large, Wilson views improvisation as a
model of interaction that can inform diverse situations and relationships.

Wilson currently performs solo, as well as with the Gust Burns Quartet, 'A
Saxophone Quartet' (with Paul Hoskin, Kelvin Pittman and Tyler Wilcox),
bst.cr (with Ben Bennett and Ryan Jewell) and in various ad hoc and
piece-oriented collaborations.

Previous and continuing collaborators include: Gust Burns, Carol Genetti,
Bonnie Jones, Jack Wright, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Bob Marsh, Nate Wooley, Gino
Robair, Tyler Wilcox, Greg Kelley, Jaimie Branch, Jacob Wick, Jonathan
Zorn, Mark Collins, Teri Nelson-Zagar, Dave Knott, and many others.

Wilson is the director of Gallery 1412, an artists’ collective and
performance space, and is a member of the Seattle Improvised Music board
of directors.
