Jacob Wick was born near Chicago, IL in 1985. An “edgy, fiercely smart
improviser” (Philadelphia Weekly), who Downbeat calls “exciting and
curious,” his playing has been described as everything from “inhuman”
(Chicago Reader) to “a Shakespeare soliloquy” (allaboutjazz.com). He has
so far released two CDs: the first, an entirely improvised duo CD with
drummer Andrew Greenwald (37:55 [2008]– Creative Sources); the second,
with a collaborative trio White Rocket (White Rocket [2009]– on Diatribe).
As a composer, performer, and improviser, his goal is not necessarily to
cross boundaries, but rather to inhabit and exploit them. To this end, he
leads or co-leads several groups, all exploring the soft tissue that binds
genres, forms, and practices: A Mown Lawn, a chamber group exploring
non-narrative song; even though you’re only 9, locating the intersection
of folk forms and loosely composed improvisation; White Rocket, a
cross-Atlantic trio wading through the mud between jazz, Karnatak music,
and contemporary classical composition; and a duo with percussionist
Andrew Greenwald, using textural improvisation to reduce the two
instruments into one. His sound sculptures mistletoe and rain, clouds have
been shown in Chicago (Heaven Gallery) and New York (Issue Project Room).
He has performed with dancer/choreographer Christine Elmo and performance
artists Amir Mogharabi and Eagle Ager, as well as musicians such as Andrew
D’Angelo, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Mark Turner, and Han Bennink. He currently
lives in Brooklyn, NY.

Wilson Shook is an improvising saxophonist living in Seattle, Washington.

Wilson’s music emphasizes focus, texture, chance and exploration.  It is
‘new music’ in that it explores each new moment and seeks to develop a
critical awareness of the present.

Sonically, Wilson's music is informed by lower case and minimalist
aesthetics, while embracing the full range of his instrument.  He is
especially interested in incidental or 'between' sounds: material that
exists on the edges and in the cracks of the conventional sonic palate.

As an artist and activist, Wilson is concerned with the actualization of
feminist and libertarian ethics.  Investigating the interplay between
artistic freedom and freedom at large, Wilson views improvisation as a
model of interaction that can inform diverse situations and relationships.

Wilson currently performs solo, as well as with the Gust Burns Quartet, 'A
Saxophone Quartet' (with Paul Hoskin, Kelvin Pittman and Tyler Wilcox),
bst.cr (with Ben Bennett and Ryan Jewell) and in various ad hoc and
piece-oriented collaborations.

Previous and continuing collaborators include: Gust Burns, Carol Genetti,
Bonnie Jones, Jack Wright, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Bob Marsh, Nate Wooley, Gino
Robair, Tyler Wilcox, Greg Kelley, Jaimie Branch, Jacob Wick, Jonathan
Zorn, Mark Collins, Teri Nelson-Zagar, Dave Knott, and many others.

Wilson is the director of Gallery 1412, an artists’ collective and
performance space, and is a member of the Seattle Improvised Music board
of directors.

The evening includes work by Lena Munday (sound), David Bryant (film), Tim DuRoche and Reed Wallsmith (sound), Danielle Ross and Jean Paul Jenkins (sound/movement), Karl Lind (video), Nathan Warner (movement), and Future Death Toll (sound). I don’t know all of the performers but I can tell you that Lind has been working on a series of street videos at least one of which nearly got him into a fight, Jean-Paul Jenkins is one of Portland’s most interesting musical improvisors with a wide palette of sound, DuRoche and Wallsmith (percussion and sax) have an ongoing and rich musical dialogue with roots in a jazz tradition, Warner comes to movement from a lit. background, and FDT improvises with sounds at a sonic frequency that just might recalibrate your heartbeat."

Bios:

Tatsuya Nakatani, originally from Osaka, Japan, is a contemporary improvising percussionist. Nakatani has created his own instrumentation, effectively inventing many instruments and extended techniques. He utilizes drumset, large bowed gongs, cymbals, singing bowls, metal objects, bells, and various sticks and bows to create an intense, organic music that defies category or genre. His music is based in experiment and improvisation, jazz, free jazz, rock, and noise, yet retains the sense of space and beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music.

In his ecstatic performances, Nakatani erects and then dismantles unique sonic realms that are at once focused and expansive, consuming and liberating. Nakatani has performed or recorded with some of the great improvising musicians of the last 20 years including Ken Vandermark, Peter Brotzmann, Joe McPhee, Mary Halvorson, Reuben Radding, and the late Peter Kowald.

In addition to live solo and ensemble performances Nakatani works as a sound designer for film and television and teaches Masterclasses and Workshops at the University level. He also heads H&H Production, an independent record label and recording studio based in Easton, Pennsylvania. He was selected as a performing artist for the Pennsylvania Performing Artist on Tour (PennPat) roster as well as a Bronx Arts Council Individual Artist grant.

Seth Olinsky is a guitarist, vocalist, composer and core member of acclaimed experimental rock group Akron/Family. He has conducted Rhys Chatham's guitar piece at Lincoln Center two years running. Olinsky has recorded with master free jazz drummer Hamid Drake, William Parker, and continues to perform and record with many notable musicians.

Wayne Horvitz is no stranger to Portland's music fans and is sure to astound us again with this killer trio. Briggan

Consisting of a left half known as Drew Ceccato (winds) and right half that answers to Chris Golinski (percussion), Brains plays improvised music meant to stir aggressive thought and produce anything but indifferent emotional responses. Encompassing influences from both modern improvisational music to throw-back 70’s free-jazz, these two musical astronauts have a lot to say. Saxophonist and composer Jacob Zimmerman (b.1986) studied at the renowned Garfield High School in Seattle, and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts where he received a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Saxophone Performance. Zimmerman is currently a 2nd year Masters Composition student at Mills College in Oakland, California. His teachers have included Roscoe Mitchell, Jerry Bergonzi, James Fei, Joe Morris, Anthony Coleman, Allan Chase, and John Mallia. Tim DuRoche is a Portland, OR-based artist and arts and culture advocate who’s worked for nearly two decades at the intersections of the visual, performing, literary and media arts. In addition to site-specific performances, sound installations, composition, nightclub, and festival appearances, DuRoche is a well-respected jazz and culture writer.

Dominic Duval is a legendary free jazz musician based in NYC and one
of the most recorded bassists working today. Active for 30 + years at
the forefront of improvisation he spent 10 years working with the
great piano genius Cecil Taylor. This is an extremely rare West Coast
appearance for Duval.

Dana Reason teaches at Oregon State University and is the Founder
and Director of the Between the Cracks: A Forum for Music, Arts,
Science and Ideas, a cross-disciplinary initiative designed to foster
a new community centered in creative, critical and cross-cultural
exchange. She’s worked an extensive array of some of contemporary
music’s finest innovators.

Tim DuRoche is a composer, jazz musician and artist who’s worked with
an extensive array of US and European avant-garde jazz greats
(including Frank Gratkowski, Perry Robinson, Toshi Makihara, Lisle
Ellis and Paul Plimley) as well as with Beijing Opera musicians,
Russian circus clowns, auctioneers, blues legends, performance poets,
and as a composer of live soundtracks for classic silent film. His
recent work has included collaborations with dance artists including
Tere Mathern Dance, Oslund+Co., BodyVox, Cydney Wilkes, and Linda K.
Johnson.

Bhob Rainey > composer, saxophonist, electronic musician

Bhob Rainey's music has become a model in the world of experimental
sound. He is the founder of both nmperign (with trumpeter Greg
Kelley) and the BSC, which he also directs. Collaborations with
musicians such as Ralf Wehowsky, Le Quan Ninh, Gunter Mueller, and
Lionel Marchetti, dancers Nicole Bindler and Yukiko Nakamura, and
filmmakers Loren Boyer, Harvey Benschoter, and William Pisarri
highlight Rainey's broad experience and outline a complex body of work
that continues to expand and surprise. His music occupies a charged
space between synthetic and organic sound, bringing forth improbable
sensual and narrative experiences through virtuosic extended
techniques, homemade synths and sound processors, found recordings,
and a kind of living silence that is apt to wreak havoc with the
perception of time.

Recordings of Rainey's music have been released on labels such as
Selektion, Grob, Sedimental, Rossbin, Twisted Village, and Siwa. They
number in the dozens and have garnered a wealth of international
accolades. Festival appearances have included Musique Action, Instal,
Amplify, Densites, Fruits d'Mhere, High Zero, and Improvised and
Otherwise.

Rainey has also performed the works of Christian Wolff (with the
composer), John Cage, and Cornelius Cardew and is the orchestral
arranger for pop artists Damon and Naomi.
